OPEN MSG WITHOUT OUTLOOK
Open an MSG file without Outlook
You do not need a Microsoft 365 subscription or the Outlook desktop application just to read a saved .MSG email. MSG Opener interprets the file in your browser and presents the message in a readable view without requiring an account, extension or software installation.
What an MSG file contains
MSG is Microsoft Outlook’s format for storing an individual message. A file can contain the subject, sender and recipient information, timestamps, plain-text or HTML message bodies, attachments and other Outlook-specific properties. Some MSG files also contain another complete MSG email as an attachment.
What you can do without Outlook
- Read the message body and basic sender/recipient information.
- Download ordinary attachments individually.
- Open an MSG email attached inside another MSG.
- View technical internet headers when the file contains them.
- Save a text copy, sanitized HTML copy or print the message to PDF.
No installation and no file upload
Traditional MSG software often requires a desktop installation. Many web converters require an upload. MSG Opener uses a different model: the parsing code runs inside the browser tab and reads only the file you select from your device. The email is not sent to MSG Opener for processing.
Limits to know before you start
Outlook MSG files can vary. Damaged, encrypted or unusual Outlook items may not parse completely. The viewer also does not certify senders or attachments as trustworthy. If you download an attachment, treat it like any other file received by email and use appropriate security checks before opening it.
Use the free browser viewer on the MSG Opener home page. The selected email is processed on your device.
