How to open an MSG file on Mac
A saved Microsoft Outlook email can arrive as a .msg file, but macOS does not treat MSG as a native mail format. MSG Opener reads the file directly in Safari or another modern browser, so you can view the message without installing Outlook or sending the email to a conversion server.
How to open an MSG file on your Mac
- Save the .MSG attachment or file to your Mac.
- Open MSGOpener.com in Safari.
- Drag the file onto the viewer or choose it in Finder.
- Review the subject, sender, recipients, date and message body.
- Download ordinary attachments or open an attached MSG message when one is present.
What the browser viewer can show
MSG Opener is designed for saved Outlook email messages. It can display common message metadata, plain-text or sanitized HTML message content, file attachments and MSG messages nested inside another MSG file. When technical internet headers are present, the viewer can expose those too.
The tool is for reading and extracting a saved message. It does not connect to your Microsoft account, mailbox or Outlook installation.
Why local processing matters
Email files can contain personal, legal or business information. MSG Opener parses the selected file with JavaScript running on your device. The contents of the MSG file are not uploaded to MSG Opener for conversion or storage.
The formatted message view also disables remote images, scripts, forms, frames and live external links. That limits several common tracking and active-content behaviors, but it does not prove that the message or its downloaded attachments are safe.
Need a copy you can keep?
After opening the message, you can save a plain-text copy, create a sanitized HTML copy or use the browser print dialog to save the displayed message as a PDF. Attachments remain separate files and should be handled according to their own file types.
