Is an MSG file safe to open?
An Outlook .MSG file is not automatically dangerous, but the file format does not guarantee that its contents are trustworthy. Like an email in a mailbox, an MSG can contain deceptive text, links, tracking resources and attachments that deserve caution.
Risks that can be inside an MSG file
- Phishing or social engineering: the message text can impersonate a person or company.
- Remote tracking: HTML email can reference images or resources hosted on external servers.
- Unsafe attachments: documents, archives and other files can contain malicious content.
- Misleading links: visible link text can differ from the destination.
Before opening a saved email
Confirm that you expected the file and recognize the context in which you received it. Be cautious with urgent requests involving passwords, payments, account changes or security warnings. If the message contains attachments, do not assume they are safe merely because the email itself displays correctly.
What MSG Opener blocks
The viewer processes the MSG data locally and sanitizes its formatted message view. Remote images, scripts, forms, frames and clickable external links are disabled. These restrictions reduce several tracking and active-content behaviors while still allowing the readable message to be displayed.
What the viewer cannot guarantee
MSG Opener is not an antivirus engine, sender-authentication service or forensic validation tool. It cannot prove that a sender is genuine or that an attachment is harmless. Downloaded files should still be scanned and handled according to your normal security practices.
